The man comes out on stage.
He steps up to the mic. The audience is tense, waiting.
He clears his throat a few times, cracks his neck. Then he leans in close to the microphone and takes a deep breath before saying one single, precious sentence.
"I believe that gay people and women are equal to the rest of us."
He steps back. The audience is stunned, silent. Then, slowly and carefully, a few people begin to clap. Then more. Then more. Soon the entire audience is on their feet, cheering for the white, heterosexual, cisgender man who is the Supreme Spokesperson for the entirety of the queer and feminist communities. He is lauded in the media as being a paragon of tolerance and equality, a hero for the new, progressive age. He receives a record deal and his songs are broadcast all over the continent. He has done it. He has erased bigotry from the world.
I am very annoyed with queer representation. Ask me about this sometime.
